The Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence, Franklin (TN) resident Martha Vowell concentrates deeply as she breaks fresh beans from Williams Produce Market. As part of The Lantern’s “Farm-to-Table” program, the memory care community utilizes local farmers markets to find a variety of fresh, local produce. “As part of our Meaningful Day program, we engage residents with personal and purposeful activities, encouraging them to take ownership of their food, just as they would have done at home,” explains Lantern executive director Ashley Briggs. “As the residents spent the afternoon snapping beans and shucking corn to be prepared by our food service department, Martha Vowell recalled childhood memories of growing up on a farm. ‘We always had to help do these things. I could snap beans in my sleep!’ she joked.”
