With a Hint of Mayo: Morning Pointe of Russell Director of Nursing Travis Large

Travis Large, director of nursing at Morning Pointe of Russell, Kentucky, Assisted Living, brings a varied and experienced background to his leadership role, including eight years with Mayo Clinic.

At age 18, Travis started his healthcare career as a phlebotomist before becoming a certified nursing assistant. He worked at Morning Pointe of Russell at that point as a CNA and was also a med tech and EMT.

Travis moved to Florida to finish nursing school and became a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in 2016. While he was in the Sunshine State, he jumped at the opportunity to work for the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. He was the LPN on a team serving gastroenterology patients and managed a team of esophagus specialists.

“I would interview and assess patients, gather histories, and explain treatment plans,” Travis shared. “After procedures, I would follow up with them and explain their results. I was the patients’ primary contact. We saw people from all over the world.”

Travis loved his years working with Mayo Clinic, the work they did and their patient-first philosophy. He would have stayed there, but as he started a family, they talked about moving back to Kentucky.

Coming Back to Morning Pointe

“My son is now 10, and I wanted him to grow up with memories of family and cousins,” Travis explained. “When I moved back here, Morning Pointe of Russell was one of the first places I looked for a job.”

The DON position was open at the time, and it was a natural fit for Travis, who loves working with seniors. He took the job in October 2023.

“I am enjoying it quite a bit,” Travis said. “Mayo helped prepare me for this position, and I feel like I have a lot to offer. I have a great team, too, and we work closely together. I also like to listen to the residents’ stories. I’ve learned a lot about life from them.”

Welcome back to Morning Pointe, Travis! We are glad you are part of our team.
