If you spend even five minutes with Johnnie, you’ll understand why the halls feel a little brighter when he’s around. He’s one of those people who carries laughter in his pocket — someone who can turn an ordinary moment into something residents talk about all day.
But the story behind that joy is just as meaningful.
Johnnie grew up with two strong examples of service. His father was a minister, and his mother was a nurse — a pair who taught him early what it means to care for people with patience, humor, and heart. Born in Ohio, he moved to Knoxville at 13 and graduated from Central High School in 1997. Life took him many places from there, but one thing stayed constant: his love for people.
He raised four boys — now ages 23, 16, 10, and 8 — and he’ll tell you without hesitation that being their dad is one of the biggest accomplishments of his life. Another? Becoming a deacon at his church, where he serves with the same warmth and steadiness he brings to Morning Pointe. He also earned his CDL along the way, adding yet another chapter to a life full of hard work.
Johnnie first joined Morning Pointe of Powell as a Resident Assistant, known instantly for his jokes, his quick wit, and his ability to lighten even the hardest days. When he recently transitioned to Activities Assistant, something clicked. The role fits him perfectly — a place where humor, connection, and heart come together.
He’ll tell you his favorite part of the job is simple: making residents laugh.
Whether he’s leading an activity, cracking a joke in the hallway, or just lifting someone’s spirits, Johnnie is the kind of person who makes a community feel like home. And when he’s not at Morning Pointe, you’ll likely find him on the basketball court, coaching his son’s team and cheering just as loudly there as he does here.
Every day, Johnnie brings joy. And around here, that joy makes all the difference.
