Finding Home Away From Home: A College Student’s Unexpected Connection in Senior Living

Lexington, Ky. (April 24, 2026) — For University of Kentucky junior Gabby Johnson, what started as a simple volunteer opportunity has quickly become something much more meaningful.

Originally from Wisconsin, Johnson is studying Communications at the University of Kentucky and, like many students, adjusting to life away from home. But over the past few months, she has found an unexpected sense of belonging at Morning Pointe of Lexington Assisted Living.

“Volunteering here has been such a blessing,” Johnson said. “Getting to meet all of our wonderful residents and helping out with activities like bingo, walking club, and special events has been so rewarding. Seeing the joy on their faces makes it all worthwhile.”

Johnson spends her time assisting with a variety of daily activities, offering both support and companionship to residents. Whether she’s calling numbers during bingo, walking alongside residents during exercise programs, or lending a hand at community events, her presence has made a difference.

For Johnson, the experience has been just as impactful personally.

“Being so far from home, it’s helped me feel like I’m part of a community and truly at home here in Lexington,” she said. “I’m looking forward to many more fun times together.”

Her story reflects the heart of volunteerism during National Volunteer Week, a time dedicated to recognizing individuals who give their time to support others and strengthen their communities. Volunteers like Johnson play a vital role in enhancing daily life for residents, bringing energy, connection, and a sense of continuity across generations.

Morning Pointe of Lexington Assisted Living offers personalized care, dining, and life enrichment services designed to support seniors in a comfortable, engaging environment, with associates available to provide support and peace of mind for both residents and their families.

As Morning Pointe Senior Living celebrates National Volunteer Week, stories like Johnson’s serve as a reminder that meaningful impact does not require grand gestures. Sometimes, it is simply about showing up, being present, and creating moments that matter.
