ATHENS, Tenn. — March 4, 2026—For one Athens family, nursing is more than a career. It is a legacy built on compassion, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to caring for others.
Phyllis Stieb, 83, a resident at Morning Pointe of Athens Assisted Living, recently experienced a full-circle moment decades in the making. In December 2025, she attended her granddaughter Alyssa Kirksey’s nursing graduation and watched as Alyssa was pinned by her mother, Susan Kirksey. Years earlier, Phyllis had celebrated Susan’s own nursing milestone. Now, three generations share the same calling.
Together, Phyllis, Susan, and Alyssa represent more than 55 years of combined nursing service.
Phyllis earned her Licensed Practical Nurse credential in 2002, choosing to pursue nursing later in life after spending years as a stay-at-home mother raising her children. Her decision to enter healthcare was rooted in a desire to serve and make a difference.
Her daughter Susan earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1994. In December 2025, Susan had the honor of pinning her daughter Alyssa as she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, continuing the family tradition.

For Phyllis, watching that moment unfold was deeply meaningful. What began as her personal step of faith into nursing has now become a multigenerational legacy of service.
In a unique connection, Phyllis also attended nursing school alongside Crystal Sutton, who now serves as Executive Director at Morning Pointe of Athens. Years later, they find themselves reunited, both still dedicated to caring for others in different but equally impactful ways.
“To witness three generations of nurses in one family is incredibly special,” said Crystal Sutton, Executive Director at Morning Pointe of Athens. “Phyllis has always had a heart for serving others, and seeing that same compassion carried forward in her daughter and granddaughter is such a beautiful reminder of how purpose and calling can shape a family’s story. We are so proud of her and the example she continues to set.”
Stories like this reflect the powerful role nurses play not only in their communities but within their own families. From grandmother to granddaughter, the Stieb and Kirksey family’s journey highlights resilience, dedication, and the lasting impact of choosing a life of service.
For Phyllis, the celebration was more than a graduation ceremony. It was a reminder that it is never too late to follow a calling, and that sometimes the greatest legacy is the inspiration passed from one generation to the next.
