A Life of Service, Honored in Full: What the Nurse Honor Guard Represents

RUSSELL, Ky. — May 5, 2025—At the end of life, when words are often hard to find, nurses have a way of showing up with quiet dignity, compassion, and respect. The Nurse Honor Guard exists to recognize that calling, offering a final tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to caring for others.

The Nurse Honor Guard is a volunteer group of licensed nurses who participate in memorial services and funerals for fellow nurses, honoring their commitment to the profession. Rooted in tradition, many ceremonies include symbolic elements and references to Florence Nightingale, recognizing the legacy and enduring impact of nursing across generations.

For Dorrie Moore, Director of Nursing at The Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence, Russell, becoming part of the Nurse Honor Guard is both a professional milestone and a deeply personal honor.

“I feel very honored to be a part of this group which pays tribute to the nursing professionals who have paved the way for me to excel not only as a nurse, but as a human being,” said Moore. “At the same time, I am so humbled that I could be a member of such a wonderful group.”

Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses in good standing may apply to join the Nurse Honor Guard, committing themselves to carrying out its mission of service and remembrance. Moore now joins in that mission, participating in memorial services, funerals, induction ceremonies, and community events.

Her path to nursing reflects a steady, intentional journey built on compassion and purpose. Beginning her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Moore continued advancing her education and experience, becoming a medication aide, then a Licensed Practical Nurse, and ultimately a Registered Nurse. Each step was guided by a desire to care for residents and enhance their quality of life.

Her leadership style is rooted in service, extending beyond residents to their families and fellow associates. She has mentored team members to pursue careers in healthcare, helping guide some to become Certified Nursing Assistants and even take the next step toward nursing school. In moments of grief, she has been a steady presence, offering comfort and guidance to families navigating the challenges of dementia.

One family member described her simply as an “angel on earth,” reflecting the quiet but powerful role she plays in their lives.

“I knew from the moment I met Dorrie that she was special,” said Nicole West, Executive Director at The Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence, Russell. “She embodies everything a nursing leader should be. Dorrie sets the standard that all of us should follow. She is a true servant leader, putting all others, staff, and residents before herself. Her spirit and strong faith are evident when she walks into a room. She encourages and inspires all those around her. I am so thankful to know her, to work with her, and to learn from her each day.”

That same spirit of service is what connects Moore’s daily work to the deeper meaning behind the Nurse Honor Guard. It is not just about honoring the end of a nurse’s journey, but recognizing a life shaped by compassion, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Her leadership reflects the level of care and dedication found across Morning Pointe Senior Living communities, where a standard of excellence is not just expected, but lived out each day through the people who serve.

In both her work and this new role, Moore continues to carry forward a legacy of care, one that extends beyond the walls of the community and into the lives she touches, both in life and in remembrance.
