Top Things to Look for When Touring an Assisted Living Community

  1. Services and Care: Make sure the community offers the care your loved one needs now—and what they may need in the future. Ask about medication management, bathing assistance, memory care services, and more.
  2. Building Layout & Design:Is the building one level for easier navigation? Does it feel welcoming, clean, and well cared for?
  3. Apartments: Ask to see a model apartment and an available unit that’s move-in ready. Look for updated carpets, fresh paint, and overall cleanliness.
  4. Dining Experience: Ask to view a current menu—or even better, stay for a meal! Meals should be fresh, offer variety, and include fruits, vegetables, and dietary accommodations. Is there a dietitian involved in meal planning?
  5. Ease of Accessibility: Is the dining room easily accessible for residents using walkers or wheelchairs?
  6. Staff Engagement: Observe how the staff interact with residents. Are they friendly, attentive, well-groomed, and genuinely caring?
  7. Caregiver Ratios and Nursing:Ask about the caregiver-to-resident ratio. Most assisted living communities have 24 access to a nurse and 24-hour staff made up of resident assistants and CNAs. Can vary state to state and assisted living vs memory care.
  8. Resident Feedback:Speak with a current resident. How long have they lived there? What do they enjoy most about the community?
  9. Cleanliness Standards:Public restrooms are often a strong indicator of cleanliness across the building—take a look.
  10. Life Enrichment & Activities: Ask to see the activity calendar. Are there meaningful opportunities for social, physical, and spiritual engagement?
  11. Survey Results:Request a copy of the latest state survey or inspection results to see how the community is performing.

Remember: It’s okay to take your time and trust your instincts. Touring an assisted living community is about more than facts—it’s about feeling whether this could be home for someone you love.
