How Medication Reviews Support Safer, More Thoughtful Senior Care

At Morning Pointe Senior Living, caring for residents means looking at the whole person—not just individual needs in isolation. Safety, comfort, and well-being guide every part of our approach, including how medications are managed. One important way we support proactive, high-quality care is through a process called a Drug Regimen Review.

What Is a Drug Regimen Review?

Twice a year, a licensed geriatric pharmacist conducts a comprehensive review of each resident’s medications. This review ensures that every prescription remains appropriate, effective, and aligned with the resident’s current health needs. Rather than looking at medications one by one, the pharmacist considers the full clinical picture.

What the Pharmacist Evaluates

During a Drug Regimen Review, the pharmacist carefully examines:

  1. Medical history, diagnoses, lab results, and vital signs
  2. All prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements
  3. Whether each medication has a clear clinical purpose
  4. Potential duplicate, outdated, or unnecessary medications
  5. Effectiveness, side effects, and possible drug interactions
  6. Proper dosing based on age, weight, and organ function
  7. Any required lab work or follow-up monitoring

This thorough review helps ensure medications continue to support—not complicate—a resident’s overall health.

Why These Reviews Matter

Medication needs can change over time, especially as health conditions evolve. Regular Drug Regimen Reviews help:

  1. Improve safety by identifying concerns early
  2. Reduce side effects such as dizziness, confusion, or fatigue
  3. Keep treatment plans up to date and effective
  4. Eliminate unnecessary or duplicate medications
  5. Support quality of life so residents can feel their best day to day

What Happens Next

After each review, the pharmacist shares any recommendations with the resident’s primary care provider. Medication changes, if needed, are always made by the physician, ensuring continuity of care and appropriate medical oversight.

Drug Regimen Reviews are a routine part of Morning Pointe’s commitment to thoughtful, proactive senior care. They provide an added layer of reassurance for residents and families, reinforcing our focus on safety, clinical excellence, and quality of life at every stage of aging.
