How one volunteer helps others feel safe and seen

DANVILLE, Ky. —April 8, 2026— At Morning Pointe of Danville Assisted Living, volunteers often become something more. They become trusted companions, calming voices, and part of the community’s everyday rhythm. For Kay Patrick, that role came naturally.

Since October 2024, Kay has been a consistent and caring presence, first stepping in alongside her husband, David Patrick, the community chaplain, to help during the transition into the new building. What started as a helping hand during a busy season quickly grew into something deeper.

Today, Kay is known for showing up wherever she is needed. She joins residents on lunch outings, helps prepare for family nights, and spends time simply listening and connecting. It is often in those quiet conversations that her impact is felt most.

“Kay truly has a shepherd’s heart,” said Christy Sleeper, Life Enrichment Director at Morning Pointe of Danville Assisted Living. “She connects so naturally with our residents, especially those who may be quieter or more reserved. You can see how much more comfortable they feel when she is around.”

That presence made a difference during a recent outing when a resident became anxious. Drawing on her background as a retired registered nurse, Kay gently reassured her, helping her feel safe and supported in the moment.

Her experience in nursing spans multiple areas, but it is her natural compassion that stands out most. Kay has a way of drawing residents in, helping them open up and feel seen.

Outside of Morning Pointe, Kay continues that same spirit of service through volunteer work at her church and through the relationships she builds with her family.

With National Volunteer Week approaching, the Morning Pointe of Danville campus looks forward to celebrating Kay and all of its unique volunteers across the community. Their presence helps create the kind of environment where residents feel supported, engaged, and truly at home.

At Morning Pointe, volunteers like Kay remind everyone that care is not only about what is done, but how it is done.

“Kay is always willing to jump in and help wherever needed,” Sleeper added. “She brings kindness, warmth, and a genuine love for our residents every time she walks through the door.”
